What is the DKW / Mil-Dot ranging formula?

DKW is a distance estimation method known under this name in Polish military training materials. The abbreviation comes from the Polish terms for Distance, Angle and Target size. Internationally, the same calculation is referred to as the Mil-Dot Ranging Formula and is used with mil-based reticles.

What are mils (thousandths) in a reticle?

A mil is an angular unit used in mil-based optics. In practical terms, 1 mil subtends about 1 meter at 1000 meters (or 10 cm at 100 meters).

Is the result accurate?

No. This is an estimation tool. Accuracy depends on correct mil reading, realistic target size, and observation conditions.

Why does switching meters to yards change the result?

Changing the distance unit (D) triggers a recalculation of the formula, not just a display conversion. This behavior is mathematically correct.
